Opportunities of the Month

The Boys & Girls Club of Denton County  needs volunteers for youth mentoring  programs,  leadership and computer instructors,  facility maintenance, athletic  programs,  special  events, etc.  Background check required.

Financial Stability Partnership: In 2006, $15 million dollars in tax credit went unclaimed in Denton County.  Tax preparation assistance and promotion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) are important to low income taxpayers.  Based upon information received from United Way of Denton County, the IRS estimates that 4 million eligible individuals annually fail to file for the tax credit.  RSVP is partnering with United Way and the IRS to offer free tax preparation services to qualifying residents this tax season.  Volunteers for this program will receive training in January 2009.  

The Texas Youth Commission needs volunteers to mentor and tutor  male juvenile offenders with substance abuse problems. Also, Pen Pals needed  to show support and encouragement to a troubled youth.  Background check required.

Seniors for Childhood Immunization:  Did you know Texas dropped nationally in ranking form 24th to 34th in the number of children immunized by the age of two?  In 2003, Denton County Health Department reported 26 cases of whooping cough.  That number rose to 95 in 2005, and in 2007 Denton County is averaging 5 cases per month.  You can help personally educate new mothers about the importance of immunizations.  Training is provided.

Christian Community Action needs volunteers to tutor clients on all areas of the GED test.  Volunteers are also needed to distribute donation boxes to various business locations.

The Popcorn Brigade is looking for volunteers to pop popcorn at Wells Fargo On Friday’s. Two shifts are available: 1pm-3:30pm or 3:30pm-5:30pm.  This is an important fundraiser.  RSVP is reimbursed by Wells Fargo for the popcorn assistance.  It is lots of fun too!

The Lewisville/Flower Mound Teen Court  needs volunteers the 1st and 3rd Tuesday from approximately  6 pm—8:30 pm to assist with  jury selection,  registration,  jury room monitors and conduct  exit  interviews.

Seniors for Childhood Immunization  needs bilingual volunteers to review returned Immunization Reminder Cards and make follow-up calls to the clients to obtain the correct address information.

The Colony Community Centers needs a volunteer to coordinate volunteer administrative activities.

ReStore needs a driver to pick up donations and would be assisted by another volunteer.  The ReStore has a van and trailer to make pick-ups with as well as a large box truck that would require a Class B license, however the box truck is a 5 speed and runs rough.  As well as driving this position would also be asked to assist with customers.  A volunteer for this position is needed to work 20 hours a week.  If possible multiple volunteers could cover the hours needed. Orientation and training is provided.

Cleaning  For A Reason, which provides cleaning services for women undergoing cancer treatments,  needs clerical  volunteers  to answer phones, file,  prepare mailers, etc. 

To Prepare a Place is looking for volunteers in the following areas: Computer Education:  If you enjoy teaching this might just be a fit for you. Instructors are needed to teach basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.  How crafty are you?  Instructors are also needed to teach handwork including knitting, crocheting, or whatever your specialty might be that you would like to share. The students are unwed mothers, 18 and older that live at the agency.

Fairoaks Retirement Apartments needs volunteers to transport residents to doctor appointments who do not have their own transportation available.

Rambling Oaks Extensive Care is seeking volunteers with therapy pets to visit with  residents. Also, volunteer musical groups are also needed  to provided entertainment for the residents.

Denton County Medical Reserve Corps  needs medical and non-medical volunteers to support  health  emergencies and disaster response teams.  Training provided. 

Rockin’ Reader Intergenerational Program:Did you know less than half of kindergarten age children are read to by families on a daily basis?  Instill a love for reading in area Kindergarten and First grade students.  Spend 30 minutes a week reading to DISD and LISD students. Training is provided.

Habitat Restore is looking for volunteers to help cashiering, assisting with directing younger volunteers, and helping customers with questions on items they may want to purchase. Orientation and training is provided.
