Food Security: According to a recent study conducted by the North Texas food bank, 16.8% of Denton County residents are food insecure, equating to 115,450 total individuals. RSVP volunteers can assist with this need by delivering meals to homebound seniors and helping out in food pantries and soup kitchens. Volunteers needed at Our Daily Bread, First Refuge Ministries, SPAN, Shepherd’s Storehouse, Community Food Center, Christian Community Action, and Salvation Army.
COMBATING PRESCRIPTION AND OPIOD DRUG ABUSE: On any given day in the United States, there are more than 650,000 opioid prescriptions dispensed, 3,900 people initiate the non-medical use of prescription opioids, 580 people begin heroin use, and 78 people die from opioid related overdose (IMS Health National Prescription Audit, SAMHSA National Survey on Drug Use and Health, CDC National Vital System). Deaths attributed to overdoses involving opioids, including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin, have quadrupled in the past decade and over 165,000 people have died from prescription overdoses since 1999. This death rate by overdose is higher than deaths by car accident or gun homicides (CDC). Volunteers can help with this crisis by serving on task force to coordinate National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at senior adult retirement communities and senior centers.
Immunization Education Across the Life Span: Healthy People 2020 states that, “Despite progress, approximately 42,000 adults and 300 children in the US die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases.” Distributing timely and accurate information on immunization resources is a priority in Denton County, according to the Denton County Public Health (DCPH) . Volunteers can provide bedside outreach at area hospitals distributing immunization information to parents and guests. Text and email immunization reminders are sent to enrolled new parents. Volunteers can also help distribute immunization information(Flu, pertussis, Pneumonia) at key senior organizations.
